How long does it take to have irregular heartbeats from OSA? Does irregular heartbeats from OSA only happen when you sleep?

People with OSA do not always have irregular heartbeats. If this is a concern, an overnight sleep study in a sleep lab will be able to observe and measure this. Generally if OSA causes irregular heartbeats it is most often during sleep.

  1. The most common irregular heart beat that is provoked by OSA is something called atrial fibrillation. The cardiology examination will differentiate between atrial fibrillation secondary to cardiac disease versus reasons unknown. OSA can stress the heart muscle for many years (or many decades) and produce atrial fibrillation, which is why Cardiologists are becoming important referral sources for sleep labs. When they cannot identify a reason for the atrial fibrillation, then they will suspect OSA as playing a role.

We sleep technologists will often observe a relief of other types of irregularities in the EKG during the study. The first part of the test (without CPAP) will reveal all kinds of arrhythmias, and the CPAP portion of the study will often reveal a gradual reduction in frequency of the arrhythmias.

One thing’s for sure, you wouldn’t want to have untreated OSA if you also have a history of abnormal heart beats.
